Udawalawe

Open grassland around a large reservoir, and the most reliable place in Sri Lanka to watch family herds of elephants at any time of year.

Udawalawe’s open plains make elephants easy to watch and photograph, from tiny calves to big bulls. It sits on the way to Yala from the hills, so it’s an easy addition to a southern route.

When to go

Any month. Elephants are here year-round.

What you’ll see

Elephant families, water buffalo, raptors and a strong list of open-country birds.

Elephant throwing dust over its head
