Bundala

A Ramsar wetland of coastal lagoons and salt pans, where migrant shorebirds and flamingos winter alongside crocodiles and elephants.

Bundala is a birder’s park: shallow lagoons, scrub and dunes on the south coast near Yala. In the northern winter it fills with migrant waders, terns and, in good years, flamingos.

When to go

November to March, when the migrants are in.

What you’ll see

Waders, herons, storks and flamingos on the lagoons; hoopoes, rollers and bee-eaters in the scrub; crocodiles in the water.
